What's RAMVLER?

What's RAMVLER?

Like a motorcycle with a dulled rocker cover and faded body paint; like an owner who has aged, gathering wrinkles and streaks of gray hair—RAMVLER’s leather goods are crafted with the hope that they will serve as a "buddy," sharing the passage of time and etching a history together with that motorcycle and its owner.

Ramble with RAMVLER

Consider the motorcycles of a bygone era—Harley-Davidson, Triumph, Vespa—machines that were inextricably linked with leather. While modern motorcycles have evolved into high-performance machines with rational designs—take saddlebags, for instance, where contemporary nylon versions excel in lightness and waterproofing—this progress has come at a cost. Gone are the commanding presence, the deep attachment born from aging alongside the bike, the intimate moments of contact required for maintenance, the capacity to look back fondly even on scratches from a fall, and the patina that serves as a testament to a shared journey through time. All these qualities, lost to evolution, are reclaimed when you walk the path with RAMVLER.

Looks old fashioned, but excellent usability.

It is not merely a matter of looking old-fashioned. While leather goods of the past often featured decorative elements like studs, they were essentially mass-produced items—utilitarian tools with simple, single-function designs and manufacturing processes that often cut corners. Updating the functionality while retaining that characteristic aesthetic—which could even be described as "cheap"—presents a formidable challenge for any designer; yet, RAMVLER products go beyond simple retro reproductions. They are designed with a philosophy that prioritizes stress-free usability and enhanced structural durability.

Leathers

The meaning behind "Genuine Quality".

The concept of "Genuine Quality" that we champion embodies a commitment to a deeper level of quality. While leather is often described as tough and durable, in reality, it is weaker and less structurally consistent than woven fabrics; the truth often masked by the romanticized notion of "aging" is that deterioration begins the moment the item is first held, and the material is vulnerable to both moisture and dryness. RAMVLER products are crafted by fully understanding these inherent characteristics of leather and carefully selecting the specific materials and sections best suited for each product and component.

Signature Leather

The vegetable-tanned cowhide and horsehide that serve as the primary materials for RAMVLER products are the result of extensive discussions with tanneries in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture—a renowned Japanese leather-producing region. To achieve the precise balance of color, firmness, luster, resilience, and tactile feel—as well as the desired characteristics of how the leather ages—every aspect is meticulously fine-tuned. The process involves everything from the selection of raw hides and the blending of tanning agents to the adjustment of oil and wax content and the number of dye applications; it is a complex orchestration of elements akin to the intricate tuning of a carburetor.

Top Brands of World Leathers

Many motorcycle enthusiasts possess deep knowledge of leather, often showing as much discernment regarding their preferred leather types as they do when discussing specific model years or specifications. To meet these demands, RAMVLER has secured a wide range of signature leathers from the world’s premier tanneries—such as "Wild Saddle" from Japan’s Tochigi Leather, "Chromexcel" from America’s Horween, "Horsebutt" from Italy’s Maryam, and "Zermatt" from France’s Degermann. By incorporating these materials into limited-edition products, we aim not only to satisfy leather aficionados but also to provide an opportunity for customers to discover new preferences and appreciate the unique qualities of these fine materials.

Pattern Marking

While modern mass-produced goods often reinforce strength by sandwiching a core material between layers of leather, many vintage designs rely solely on the inherent strength of the leather itself. A crucial distinction regarding leather—unlike woven fabrics—is that the density, grain direction, and texture of its internal fibers vary by section; these factors significantly influence elasticity, stretch direction, strength, and durability. Because these characteristics are not apparent in a brand-new product but manifest as distinct differences only after the leather softens through use, they play a major role in long-term durability. Consequently, RAMVLER positions "pattern marking"—the precise layout of pattern pieces on the hide—as the most critical step in ensuring product quality.

Laboratory

Laboratory -Inside of RAMVLER R&D-

RAMVLER R&D is the dedicated atelier where RAMVLER products are created. It embodies the full extent of the expertise, accumulated know-how, and proven track record—built through a collaborative partnership between designers and craftsmen who have produced over 2,000 varieties of bespoke leather goods over more than two decades—all poured into the RAMVLER brand.

Designer's Voice

My role involves translating the vision and visual style sought by the Boss into technical drawings and handing them off to the craftspeople. Designing leather goods specifically tailored to complement vintage motorcycles—drawing on the Boss’s own background as a custom bike builder—aligns perfectly with my roots; it is a field where I truly thrive. RAMVLER’s overarching theme—maintaining a classic, simple aesthetic while integrating modern functionality—often presents significant design challenges, yet it is precisely this complexity that makes the work so rewarding, offering a level of creative engagement that simply isn't found in merely replicating past designs.

Craftman's Voice

Our approach is unique. Working from the designer's blueprints, I select the specific sections of leather to be used and personally handle every stage of production—from pattern layout and cutting to sewing and final finishing. In essence, the leather transforms into a finished product right in my hands; I keep a watchful eye on every step of the process, and every single part is assembled through my own touch. This allows for a level of "complete" inspection—covering details like adhesive application and stitch tension—that would be impossible to verify through standard visual checks of the finished item; effectively, the entire time spent crafting the piece is also time spent inspecting it. While this method—which prioritizes quality over production speed—may occasionally result in longer wait times for delivery, I am convinced it is the most reliable way to ensure consistent, uncompromising quality.
